Use of Hormonal Contraceptives and HIV Acquisition in Women: a Systematic Review of the Epidemiological Evidence Published

Chelsea B. Polis and Kathryn M. Curtis

The systematic review of epidemiological data relating to HC and HIV acquisition conducted for the 2012 WHO meeting included all relevant studies published (or in press) by December 15, 2011. Of the eight studies included in the reivew, all reported findings for progestin-only injectables, and seven also reported findings for oral contraceptive pills. The study found that observational data raised concern about a potential association between use of DMPA and risk of HIV acquisition.
