Heffron Study Finds Increased Risk of HIV Acquisition and Transmission Among Women Using Hormonal Contraceptives

An October 2011 analysis by a group of researchers, led by Renee Heffron of the University of Washington  and published in Lancet Infectious Diseases, found two-fold increases in the risks of both HIV acquisition and HIV transmission among women in HIV-discordant couples using hormonal contraceptives, particularly the progestin-only injectable, compared with women not using hormonal contraceptives.
